AIRPORT SECURITY TECHNICIAN

(Regular Full-Time   Non-Exempt)    Starting Wage:   $16.96/hr.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The purpose of this position is to assist the Airport Security Coordinator in planning, organizing, and managing all aspects of airport security. This position performs a wide variety of security and/or operations duties. The position works both independently and supervised, and uses considerable independent judgment in dealing with difficult situations. The incumbent receives work assignments, instructions, and evaluations by the Airport Security Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs inspections of the airport operations area (AOA), Security Identification Display area (SIDA), Secured Area, and Sterile area. (Daily)
  2. Answers calls and complaints received by radio, telephone, or in person involving routine contacts with airport tenants, airline operators, and the public. (Daily) 
  3. Performs daytime and nighttime safety and security inspections and documents discrepancies. (Daily) 
  4. Conducts security patrols, issues security challenges, and conducts vehicle security inspections. (Daily) 
  5. Responds to Airport security emergencies and performs duties as directed. (As Needed) 
  6. Teaches classes, takes fingerprints, and performs other identification duties in the course of issuing security access identification media. (Daily) 
  7. Enforces Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations and standard operating procedures related to airport security and safety. (Daily) 
  8. Completes written and electronic reports and forms. (Daily) 
  9. Communicates with tenants, operators, airlines, and other airport divisions regarding routine security matters. (Daily) 
  10. Operates computer controlled security access system and monitors closed circuit television for violations of security and safety regulations. (Daily) 
  11. Perform duties during adverse weather, around aircraft noise, fumes, chemicals, and hazardous working conditions. (As Required)

NATURE AND SCOPE: 

The incumbent reports to the Airport Security Coordinator and coordinates the general security operation of the Airport with airport staff.  The Airport Security Coordinator reports to the Assistant Airport Director, who reports to the Airport Director.  The incumbent performs security inspections of the terminal, Secured Area, Security identification Display Area, Sterile Area, and Airport Operations Area and reports discrepancies to the Airport Security Coordinator. Weekend, holiday, and responses to unscheduled callbacks may be required as determined by the Airport Security Coordinator, Assistant Airport Director, and Airport Director. The incumbent meets regularly with the Airport Security Coordinator to review status and priority of jobs and to receive direction for special projects and tasks.

This position’s greatest challenge is functioning in a fast-paced environment with numerous interruptions where deadlines are crucial and work must be accomplished in a courteous and professional manner.  

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

  1. Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including but not limited to: architectural and engineering drawings, insurance requirements, training reports, emergency and security directives and manuals; policy and procedure manuals.  Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules and regulations, etc. 
  2. Ability to prepare a variety of documents including security inspections, badge applications, key issuance forms, etc. 
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with Airport personnel, tenants, general public, consultants, engineers, architects, contractors, vendors, FAA and TSA personnel, verbally and in writing. 
  4. Assist with the completion of all documentation related to the Airport Security Program (ASP) and log all security activities on the airport. 
  5. Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgment in performing diversified work activities. 
  6. Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and /or judgmental criteria, as opposed to criteria which are clearly measurable. 
  7. Prevents public entry into areas identified in the Airport Security Program (ASP) as Secure, Sterile, SIDA, or AOA 
  8. Routinely meets with the Airport Security Coordinator to review work assignments, use of security equipment, special projects, and quality assurance. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY:

 Extensive knowledge of airport security regulations, facilities, safety, access, and security procedures; 

Extensive knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and policies and procedures relating to airport security including Transportation Security Administration Part 1542. 

Ability to read, understand, interpret, and apply complex policies, rules and regulations pertaining to airport security 

Formulate and implement procedures for use in the event of airport security incidents 

Communicate and interact effectively with personnel at all levels within the organization 

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

High School diploma or equivalent is required. Prior airport security experience is highly desired. 

Ability to pass a rigorous background security check to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Area (SIDA) badge. 

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
