Job Description

ATTENDANT                    Seasonal /Part-Time  Starting Wage:   $8.25/hr.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Attendant contributes to the overall mission of Sunset Zoo by offering friendly and professional services to the Zoo guests at the food/beverage services, ticket booth, and gift shop. This position is responsible for providing excellent customer service and handling day to day transactions in the guest services operation.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Ability to deliver excellent communication skills both orally and in written form with the general public and Zoo staff using proper grammar, punctuation and spelling.  (Daily)
  2. Contribute to good public relations through professional and polite contact with the public, both in person, on the telephone, and via email.  (Daily)
  3. Ability to work non-routine hours including evenings, weekends and holidays. (As needed)
  4. Represent Sunset Zoo at community events. (As needed)
  5. Ability to work without direct supervision. (Daily)
  6. Ability to use word processing programs and database programs. (Daily)
  7. Working knowledge of AZA accredited zoos as conservation organizations and ability to ensure all work supports this mission.  (Daily)
  8. Develop a complete and accurate working knowledge of Rec Trac software and ability to cross train Zoo staff  (Daily)
  9. Ability to operate a cash register and credit card machine for the purpose of collecting money (Daily)
  10. Other duties as assigned

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The incumbent reports to the Guest Services Coordinator and is responsible for the day to day transactions of the guest services operations at Sunset Zoo.  Key responsibilities include preparing product related to concessions, maintaining a clean and well-stocked area, controlling food quality, service, cleanliness, safety of stand and gift shop, compiling and maintaining inventory, accepting payments, reconciliation of cash and preparing reports.  The position of Attendant requires patience and tolerance in relating to numerous personalities, the ability to be flexible in work priorities, and willingness to undertake new tasks as assigned.  Additionally, the incumbent must work well under pressure and possess the ability to efficiently and effectively problem solve unforeseen complexities. The position requires a complete and accurate working knowledge of the Rec Trac software system and the ability to train others on the system. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

Must demonstrate considerable tact and poise; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; and effective and professional communication with the public. Ability to regularly apply creativity and a high level of enthusiasm to all work. Considerable knowledge of standard secretarial practices and of business English, spelling, vocabulary, arithmetic, modern office equipment, practices and procedures. Considerable skill in operation of a computer and other electronic media. Also, must be able to operate food service equipment.  Ability to establish and maintain complex office records and files, interpret rules and regulations and apply them to work situations. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, establish and maintain good working relationships with the Zoo’s support organizations, other employees, and the general public.

 EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

Food/beverage and customer service experience preferred.

Required Knowledge:

Computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook, Rec Trac required. 

Knowledge of proper cash handling techniques

Knowledge of general mathematics and proper English

Knowledge of food and beverage operations

Skills/Abilities:

Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Team oriented with the ability to work independently, with little supervision.

Flexible, self-starter, extremely resourceful, and detail oriented.

Strong public speaking and presentation skills.

Ability to read and comprehend written material of a complex nature.

Excellent verbal and written skills needed to communicate in a highly professional and competent manner.

Ability to cope with stress brought on by dealing with irate and/or defensive guests.

Ability to utilize creativity and writing ability on a daily basis.

Ability to work frequent evenings and weekends.

Maintain valid Class C Kansas driver's license.

Ability to regularly lift up to 40 lbs
