Job Description

PHOTOGRAPHY INTERN   (Temporary / Part-time / Non-benefit)      

Starting Salary:  $9.25/hr.       Review of Applications Begins Immediately

 This intern will assist the FHDC by taking photographs to be used on website, social media and outreach and communication pieces and advertisements.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Capture moments at special events such as Flint Hills Festival, National Day of the Cowboy, and exhibit openings.
  2. Shoot products in the Gift Store.
  3. Photograph rental areas and events.
  4. Shoot landscapes/the building.
  5. Ability to edit photographs for use in different formats.
  6. Ability to interact with guests, co-workers and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner. 
  7. Excellent organizational skills to be able to plan, anticipate, and evaluate necessary resources for completion of assigned projects.
  8. Ability to work independently on a variety of projects and activities simultaneously with guided supervision.
  9. Possess knowledge of FHDC Programs.
  10.  Ability to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds. (Occasionally)
  11. Possess knowledge of general mathematics and proper English.


The Photography Intern works under the supervision of the Marketing Coordinator. The incumbent is responsible for completing projects assigned to them with guided assistance.  Projects may include but are not limited to photographing all-day events, framing shots to encompass entire feel of event and framing/directing individuals for a shot.  In addition, the Photography Intern may be asked to edit photographs to be used in different formats.


All evaluations required for university credit will be completed by the Marketing Coordinator in a timely manner. The staff at the Flint Hills Discovery Center agree to work with university advisors/professors once an intern has applied and is offered the Photography Intern position.  Depending on length of internship, internal evaluations following a similar format to evaluations received by regular City of Manhattan employees will be administered at the mid-point of the internship and at the end.


Education or work experience with an emphasis in photography.

Required knowledge:

  • Workings of a Canon camera
  • General knowledge of Adobe products
  • Understanding of the FHDC Programs and events
  • Proficient in English


  • Frame shots to capture entire feel of event
  • Ability to direct others when framing shots
  • Ability to utilize creativity and on a daily basis
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Team oriented but has the ability to work independently
  • Flexible, self-starter, and detail oriented
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and during school breaks if needed
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
