Job Description


$8.50/hr.             CLOSING DATE:  06/28/2019                (Seasonal Part-time)

Swim America™ is a national learn-to-swim program. Swim America™ is goal driven and technique oriented. Swim instruction sessions run four days a week for three 2-week sessions. The program adjusts swim coaches to the appropriate skill levels of the swimmers enrolled. Swim coaches teach participants to swim according to the program standards.

Job Duties

  • Provide excellent customer service and possess a service philosophy which reflects the mission for the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Follows direction from MPRD supervisor, Swim America™ program director, and Swim America™ site head.
  • Teach the daily activities of the swim lessons program.
  • Regularly communicates with Swim America™ site head to ensure that all organizational goals are being met.
    • Able to establish and maintain cooperative professional working relationships with others; individually and in a team environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work will be performed at one of three outdoor aquatic facilities: City Park Waterpark, Northview Waterpark, or CiCo Waterpark. Most work will be performed outside in extreme heat which could expose the staff to various outside atmospheric conditions. Noise level and activity level will be varied. To perform the essential functions of this job, staff may be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle, feel, speak, hear, climb stairs, push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds.

Knowledge & Skills

First aid, water rescue, and CPR methods as taught in the American Red Cross Lifeguard certification class; knowledge of Swim America™ learn-to-swim program; communicate orally and in writing with customers, other lifeguards, and supervisors; provide excellent service to customers. Work in a team composed of other Swim America™ site heads, swim coaches, Lifeguards, Head Lifeguards, Assistant Managers, and Managers; learn, carry out, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Emergency Action Plans (EAP); make decisions quickly in order to respond to potential hazards or emergency situations; Minimum: knowledge of swimming technique; Preferred: Currently Certified Lifeguard, Currently Certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED.

Other Information

  • Applicants must pass a background check.
  • Staff may be asked to work weekends and holidays.
  • Waterparks are open on Memorial Day and close on Labor Day.
  • Staff will be required to attend in-service training.
  • Prefer Swim team experience or instruction on swimming techniques.
