(Regular  Full-Time   Exempt)   

 Starting Salary: Planner: $44,408.00/yr.       Planner II: $51,147.20/yr.   DOQ

Manhattan is located in the heart of the scenic Flint Hills Region of northeast Kansas and is home to Kansas State University (22,000 students) and Fort Riley.  The City encompasses 19 square miles with a population of approximately 57,000.  Manhattan serves a multi-county region of 200,000 and is a dynamic leader in education, trade, health care, arts and entertainment, and recreation, with a healthy economy and a vibrant downtown that is undergoing major redevelopment. The Manhattan region is experiencing unprecedented growth and the City is committed to sound, progressive and forward-thinking municipal planning. The Community Development Department is responsible for guiding the growth and development of the community, while preserving the environment and maintaining a high quality of life.

The Planner/Planner II performs current planning and zoning administration functions, to guide the growth and development of the City in accordance with the adopted Comprehensive Plans and regulations, by using sound planning principles and practices for data collection, performing research, and in developing reports, plans, projections and recommendations. The Planner/Planner II also assists with long range planning functions, as needed.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in planning, urban design, geography, architecture, public administration, or a related field.  A Master's degree in Planning is preferred.

When applicable, certification as a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) from the Association of State Floodplain Managers.

The Planner II must also have a minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional planning experience, preferably in municipal public sector planning. Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
